Young Writers Presented at The Play On Words Festival
March 01, 2010
Charlottetown – Saturday afternoon, March 13th, The Guild hosts the Young Writers segment of the inaugural Play On Words Storytelling Festival. Sam Alan, Joshua Scott and Ian Stretch, will present stories written by and/or intended for a younger audience.
“Both Joshua Scott and Sam Alan are Grade 6 students at West Royalty School and had the support of their teacher, Renee Blanchette, in providing their submissions to the festival”, says Cate Proctor, executive director of The Guild.
Sam is presenting three short narratives entitled “The Nature Series”. One tale is about an otter, the second piece touches on the life cycle of the forest and the third is a surprise story of which details are not being released prior to its presentation.
Joshua has composed a narrative about a young boy caught in the action of the War of 1812. His story includes historical detail, intrigue about an American spy and description of the boy’s family life in Quebec during this time period.
“I have had a sneak peek at some of their stories and these young writers are quite impressive in all aspects of their writing”, Cate adds. “The audience will not be disappointed.”
Not to be outdone, Island author Ian Stretch will recite two self-authored poems; one about a war veteran and the second about his own parents. He will also read two true stories that are both very funny and heartwarming entitled, Mac And Gracie and Rat In The Room. The stories are based on his own life experience as a young boy and are suitable for both adult and children’s audiences.
Tickets are $5 and currently available at The Guild’s box office. Showtime is 2pm with theatre doors opening at 1:30pm for general seating.
Weekend passes are also available at $32, which includes access to Friday Fantasy at 7:30pm, Saturday’s Young Writers at 2pm and Saturday’s An Island Perspective at 7:30pm.
