Writing and Performance Workshops at Play On Words Storytelling Festival
February 24, 2010
The inaugural Play On Words Storytelling Festival presents interactive writing and performance workshops on Saturday, March 13th at 12:30 and 3:30pm at The Guild.
The workshops are open to the public and presented by Tanya Davis, Island poet/songwriter/musician and storyteller who has received national acclaim and profile through appearances on CBC Radio (Vinyl Café with Stuart McLean) and is a multiple music award nominee through both Music PEI and Music Nova Scotia.
“The workshops are for all levels of writers and performers”, says Cate Proctor, executive director of The Guild. “We are pleased to offer a hands-on component to the festival that will further develop storytellers in our community.”
The writing workshop Telling Your Story has Tanya discussing the elements of personal storytelling, from a story's inception to its performance and all elements in between. Participants will have an opportunity to write and develop a story of their own – be it through song, poetry, or narrative.
“Mostly, storytelling takes a truth and the willingness to tell it. Beyond that it’s language and the ability to use it”, says Davis.
The Art Of Performance workshop will explore how performers, regardless of artistic discipline, connect with audiences. The workshop will address stage presence, nerves, delivery, eye contact, visual presentation, and articulation, along with related topics workshop participants bring.
There will also be opportunity for Tanya to demonstrate certain techniques and a chance for interested participants to strut their stuff!
Davis notes, “Where there are stories to tell, there are performers to tell them. And where getting up in front of an audience is one thing, delivering a good, well-rounded performance is altogether another.”
The Telling Your Story workshop begins at 12:30 and The Art Of Performance workshop begins at 3:30, both on Saturday, March 13 at The Guild.
Tickets are $10 for each workshop, with limited seating. Pre-registration is required through The Guild’s box office by calling 620-3333 or visiting in person between 12 noon-5, Tuesday to Saturday.
